Arwel Jones

Arwel Jones

Trustee

Arwel has significant leadership experience in schools in London and the South East. He was headteacher of Brentside High School, a large Inner London comprehensive school of approximately 1650 students, from 2003 until 2020. During his time as headteacher the school was often approached by the DfE as an example of good practice regarding excellent levels of attendance and low exclusion rates despite serving a deprived community with large numbers of students being eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant. In 2010 Arwel was the Teaching Awards secondary headteacher of the year for London and South East. Brentside was awarded National Support School status in 2016 and Arwel became an NLE. Supporting other schools and helping to develop strong school leaders has always been an important part of Arwel’s work. Brentside were a founder member of Challenge Partners. Arwel was also a member of ASCL Council for nine years and ASCL Executive for six years serving as both Chair of the Conditions and Employment Committee and as Honorary Treasurer of the Association.

Arwel left Brentside at the end of December 2020 but has continued to work as an education consultant supporting schools with school improvement initiatives and leadership development. He also returned briefly to headship in February 2022 when the DfE governance team asked if he would consider an interim headteacher role for the remainder of the 2021/2022 academic year.
