Curriculum and Assessment Review: Interim report published

Curriculum and Assessment Review - interim report published

During our autumn National Network Conference we heard from and offered feedback to Professor Becky Francis CBE and Challenge Partners Senior Partner Cassie Buchanan OBE from the curriculum and assessment review panel. On Tuesday their interim report was published.

Our CEO, Kate Chhatwal welcomed the way the report is dealing with intractable and novel challenges in a measured and evidence informed way. Among the many positives, she highlighted the commitments to:

  1. Deliver high standards for all. While rightly recognising that many of the barriers to closing the achievement gap for disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND lie beyond curriculum and assessment, the review promises steps to ensure the curriculum and assessment system reflect high expectations for all. This includes a desire to get the right balance of assessment measures to "capture the strengths of every young person".
  2. A curriculum that is "cutting edge and fit for purpose", including responding to social and technological change. Good to see AI and the environment highlighted here.
  3. Ensuring that the curriculum and related materials are inclusive, "so that all young people can see themselves represented in their learning, as well as seeing others' perspectives and broadening their horizons".

All of this without any compromise on standards and rigour, but with a determination for children, society, and the economy to thrive as well as achieve.

Drawing on her own experience with the Tomlinson Curriculum and Assessment Review, Kate concludes "I don't underestimate the challenges ahead for the panel as they move from analysis and intent to recommendations. But the direction and approach signalled by the interim report leave me profoundly hopeful"
